Fortify is a light-cure, thin-viscosity, unfilled resin formulated for use as a composite surface sealant. This material has been proven to reduce the wear of posterior composites by up to one half.
WHY SEAL COMPOSITE SURFACES?
Contouring and finishing of posterior composites with rotary instruments can create micro-cracks and surface irregularities which contribute to and expedite composite wear during the first six months of function.
During restoration placement, contraction gap formation due to polymerization shrinkage or poor marginal adaptation of the composite can result in a poor marginal seal.
Fortify is specially formulated to penetrate these micro-cracks and surface irregularities to strengthen the composite surface and increase its resistance to wear. Fortify is effective with all posterior/anterior composites (Bis-GMA or UDMA resin base) to enhance their wear resistance and improve marginal integrity. Contouring and finishing has a pronounced effect on the wear resistance of composite resins. The process is quite traumatizing to the surface creating micro-structural defects that decreases the wear resistance significantly. With the proper application of Fortify, marginal integrity is enhanced, and the overall wear rate of composite decreases by as much as 50%.
FORTIFY VS. REGULAR UNFILLED RESIN FOR COMPOSITE SURFACE SEALING
Regular unfilled resins are specially formulated for the purpose of wetting a surface prior to application of a composite material.
These unfilled resins, when light-cured, will only partially polymerize leaving a relatively thick, uncured layer of resin known as the oxygen –inhibited layer. This “sticky”, uncured resin layer infiltrates the composite material, and the two polymerize together when light-cured. It is because of the oxygen-inhibited layer that these regular unfilled resins are ineffective when used to seal composite surfaces. The unpolymerized layer of resin quickly wears away leaving a plaque trap to form.
Fortify is also an unfilled resin, but it is specially formulated to seal composite surfaces. Fortify is thinner than the regular unfilled resin, allowing for deeper penetration into composite surface irregularities and margins.
When Fortify is applied, air-thinned, and light-cured, there is no need for occlusal adjustment. Fortify polymerizes completely, leaving only an insignificant thickness of uncured resin and there is no plaque trap created.
